Neuroplasticity and Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy
Psychedelics promote rapid structural neuroplasticity — but the window closes without integration.
Recent studies (Ly et al., 2018; Raval et al., 2021) demonstrate that psychedelics including psilocybin, DMT, and LSD promote rapid growth of dendritic spines and increased dendritic arbor complexity in cortical neurons. These structural changes are observable within 24 hours of administration and persist for at least 30 days, suggesting a prolonged window of enhanced plasticity.
This finding reframes the therapeutic model. If psychedelics open a window of structural plasticity, the critical variable is not the drug but what enters the window. In a supportive therapeutic context, new patterns can be laid down. In an unstructured or hostile context, the same plasticity can reinforce maladaptive patterns. The medicine does not heal; it makes healing possible.
This paper proposes a 'critical period' model of psychedelic therapy, analogous to the developmental critical periods of language acquisition. The post-dose window (estimated 2–4 weeks of heightened plasticity) represents a therapeutic critical period during which targeted interventions — psychotherapy, somatic practices, community support — are disproportionately effective. Integration is not an afterthought; it is the active ingredient.
