Consciousness as a Mirror: Reflections from the Observatory

The dominant metaphor for consciousness in the West is the lamp: it illuminates, it projects, it generates light. This leads to the hard problem — how does matter produce light? — and to endless speculation about where the lamp is located in the brain.

But there is an older metaphor, found in Advaita Vedanta, in Dzogchen, in the contemplative traditions of the desert fathers: consciousness as a mirror. A mirror does not generate the images it holds. It is not the source of the light. It is the condition for appearances to occur — clear, present, unaffected by what it reflects.

If consciousness is a mirror, then the spiritual path is not about building a brighter lamp. It is about cleaning the glass. The obscurations — the dust of identification, the grime of reactivity — are not the mirror. They are on the mirror. And what is revealed when they are removed is not a new thing, but the original clarity that was never actually lost.
